Can I park my boat in my driveway?

Many Canadian cities limit where a boat on a trailer can sit, and several ban front driveways in winter. Here is what the cities we checked say. Rules change, so confirm with your city before you park.

What cities say

MississaugaOne trailer with one boat, up to 7.0 m long and 3.0 m high, in the interior side yard behind the front wall or the rear yard, with setbacks. On the driveway only temporarily, up to 72 hours a month (city info sheet).mississauga.ca

EdmontonEdmonton says that from April 1 to October 31 an RV may be parked at the front of a residence without a back lane, 0.6 m back from the sidewalk or curb. On the street, an RV may stay 72 hours, then must be off for 48 hours. Unattached trailers, including boat trailers, are never allowed on city streets.edmonton.ca
Winnipeg,Winnipeg's Zoning By-law 200/2006 says that between May 15 and October 31, a maximum of one recreational vehicle, travel trailer or motor home may be parked on a driveway in the front yard leading to a parking space, or in a side or rear yard. The clause does not name boats; a councillor's 2017 post says boats count as RVs, with fines up to $1,000 outside the dates. A committee was reviewing the timeline in June 2026, so confirm with the city.dmis.winnipeg.ca
MontrealMontreal says recreational equipment such as boats, canoes and trailers must be stored in parking spaces in the side or rear yard. Storage in a front-yard parking space is allowed from May 1 to September 30. A trailer may stay in the front yard from May 1 to September 30 if another parking space stays available, and has a 2 m maximum height. Rules are set by borough, so check yours.montreal.ca
Quebec CityQuebec City says recreational vehicles (trailers, tent trailers, motorhomes) and trailers are allowed in side and rear yards at any time, and in the front yard from May 1 to October 31. The page does not mention boats by name and also covers street parking for trailers, so confirm boat-specific rules with the city's 311 line.ville.quebec.qc.ca

Questions

What about Ottawa, Brampton, Hamilton or Vancouver?

We have not checked those yet. Search your city’s zoning bylaw for "recreational vehicle" or "trailer", or call 311.

Can I park the trailer on the street?

Often not for long. Edmonton never allows unattached trailers on city streets, and Calgary does not allow detached trailers on streets or alleys. Check your city.
